John Matthew Bendall was born in Bottisham (Newmarket Q3-1897 3b:506), son of Isaac and Eliza Jane BENDALL (née FULLER).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Town Street, Bottisham with his father Isaac BENDALL [40] a thatcher, born Swaffham Bulbeck; his mother Eliza Jane [31] born Ely, sister Melinda Mary [5] and brother Henry Edward [1]. All the children were born in Bottisham.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was still in Town Street, Bottisham with his parents, brother Harry (Henry Edward) and sister Emily [5] born Bottisham. Also there was his uncle Robert FULLER [43] a thatcher's labourer, born in Ely

His Army records show that on 3rd September 1919 his parents and brother Henry were at 122 High Street, Bottisham, sister Melinda Mary was in Killarney and sister Emily was at the Parsonage, Bottisham.


He enlisted in Cambridge.
He enlisted on 24th November 1915 at Cambridge, giving his date of birth as 12th July 1897, next of kin, father Isaac BENDALL. He was a farm labourer, weighed 102 lbs (46.4 kg), was 5 feet 3.5 inches (161.3 cm) tall and chest 33.5" to 35.5" (85.1 to 90.2 cm). He was posted around the regiment from 9th, to 6th to 3rd and finally to the 1st Battalion.

Posted to the British Expeditionary Force on 12th September 1916, he joined his unit in the field on 29th September.
He received gunshot wounds to face and scalp on 7th October 1916 and via No1 Red Cross Hospital, Etaples, was invalided home to Bradford War Hospital on 13th October. Recovered, he returned to France on 10th February 1917.
Wounded again on 9th May 1917, he was back with his unit on 5th June. He was reported missing in Belgium and presumed killed on 4th October 1917.

The Queen's Own were rested in September 1917 before moving to the Ypres salient for the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) and on 4th October were at Broodseinde.
They lost 108 men killed that day, of which only 23 have identified graves.
